What is Emotional Support?

Emotional support means feeling understood, cared for, and valued by people around you. In schools, support from parents and teachers is crucial for the development of students both mentally and academically.

Common Causes of Lack of Emotional Support

Busy or absent parents: Many parents who are preoccupied with work often sideline or totally neglect the well-being of their children, which ultimately has a negative impact.

Strict or hard parenting styles: When students are only corrected and not encouraged, it breaks their confidence and pushes them to please their parents or guardians rather than develop authentically.

Unapproachable teachers: Teachers who focus only on brilliant students and overlook others play a huge role in weakening the confidence of students who are ready to work hard.

Poor communication: When students are unable to express what they have in mind, they become tense and anxious, and end up going through it alone. This takes a huge toll on their mental health and academic performance.

Emotional Effects of Lack of Support from Parents

  • Low self-esteem and self-doubt
  • Anxiety and constant worry
  • Feeling unloved and lonely
  • Withdrawal from general activities
  • Poor performance in tests and assessments

Effects on Academic Life

  • Low motivation to study
  • Lack of concentration during lessons
  • Fear of asking questions and participating in activities
  • Poor performance in tests and assessments

Knowing that it's almost impossible for us students to change the manner of support from our parents and guardians, we can help ourselves or other people going through lack of support by building our own support systems.

How to Build Your Own Support Circle

Express your feelings: Talk to a trusted person about how you feel and what you're going through.

Strengthen your confidence by celebrating small achievements, avoiding comparing yourself with others, and reminding yourself of what you're good at.

Encourage others: When you support the people around you, the effect of lack of emotional support from parents, teachers, and guardians can be dealt with and managed.

Remember, you are not alone in this struggle. Many teenagers face similar challenges, and reaching out—whether to a trusted friend, a mentor, or a platform like Hamboi Mindcare—can make all the difference. Your mental health and well-being matter, and you deserve to feel supported.
